Rova has had the opportunity to listen to the group “The Bridge 8” at our dates the in Brest and Tours and combine at the end of the evening for an improvisation which went to some remarkable places.
The Bridge #8 is Mars Williams saxophones, objects, Antonin Tri-Hoang saxophone alto, clarinets, Tatsu Aoki contrebasse, shamisen, vidéo and Samuel Silvant batterie (two from Chicago and from France).
The photo is of Mars objects that he deploys throughout his set with subtlety and precision of a foley artist. Mars and Antonin interplay in the expository openings gave way to their own muscular and rigorous interpretations of the material. Tatsu held down the time in a traditional jazz bass approach of keeping time but not with a constant area sound. He would add pauses/breaks/ dynamic changes that added drama and intensify the time. The palette of Japanese string instrument techniques gave an orchestral feeling to the improvisation. Samuel playing was full of color and propulsion and his approach seemed to me like a timbales master that can be in time and out of time at the same time. ... See MoreSee Less
